In a shining example of project-based learning (PBL) in action, the 3rd grade students embarked on an exciting journey to create their very own book about symbiotic relationships in nature. This hands-on project not only deepened their understanding of science but also fostered creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking.
Guided by their teachers, Mrs. Grittini and Miss Deusinger (student teacher) the students explored the concept of symbiosis, which refers to the interaction between two different organisms living in close physical proximity, typically to the advantage of at least one of them.
After learning about symbiosis, the students each selected an example of a symbiotic relationship to focus on. They researched their chosen animals or plants. Examples ranged from the partnership between humans and dogs to the relationship between tarantulas and frogs.
Each student was tasked with creating a page for the book, complete with an illustration, a written description of their symbiotic relationship, and fun facts to make it engaging for readers. The focus was on creating a book that would be easy to read and understand for younger elementary students.
This PBL project is a fantastic example of the limitless learning opportunities happening every day in the Valley Park School District. These 3rd graders gained a richer understanding of the world around them while learning skills they can use in the future. Everyone is looking forward to their finished project.
