Mike Menley, VPES Health and PE teacher, incorporates health education into physical education lessons creating a dynamic learning environment where students can develop both their minds and bodies. "In my classes, health concepts are included in almost every lesson through engaging games, activities, and discussions. This approach helps students build a deeper understanding of how their bodies work and how to keep them healthy," said Coach Menley.
The students often begin with stretching exercises, which provide an opportunity to discuss the muscular system. Students learn to identify major muscles like the biceps, triceps, deltoids, abdominals, hamstrings, and quadriceps. Additionally, the class dives into the skeletal system, discussing major bones and their functions. Lessons also extend to other body systems, including the digestive, circulatory, respiratory, and nervous systems, focusing on the major organs and their roles.
Nutrition is an important part of health education. Through interactive activities like relay races to assemble a healthy MyPlate, students learn about balanced diets and the importance of incorporating all food groups. Games like "Risk" not only get students moving but also teach them about risk factors for cardiovascular disease and preventative measures.
"Beyond these lessons, I emphasize the broader aspects of health, including hygiene, safety, and ways to prevent illness. My goal is to make learning fun while instilling the importance of healthy eating, physical activity, and overall wellness. By fostering these habits early, we aim to help students appreciate and care for their bodies throughout their lives."
