Valley Park School District has adopted new English Language Arts and Social Studies curriculums for kindergarten through 12th grade. This week, while using their new resources that directly align with the curriculum, Mrs. Warhurst's second grade class explored the question, "How do different places affect us?" One week focused on an important topic: "How can people improve their neighborhood?" This theme tied in perfectly with the social studies unit on Civics, where the class has been discussing the important question, "How can one person make a difference?" and the importance of being a good citizen.
During these lessons, the students were encouraged to think of ways they could make a positive impact on their community by doing small things. That's when Beth, one of the second graders, came up with a wonderful idea—she wanted to pick up trash around the school to help keep the campus clean. Beth asked if she could organize a cleanup, and Mrs. Warhurst told her they could plan it for one day during their flex time, so Mrs. Warhurst could join them.
Excited about her idea, Beth spread the word to her classmates. She brought a sign-up sheet to flex time and encouraged others to get involved. Her enthusiasm inspired excitement and many of her peers wanted to join in. Beth explained, "I was really excited to start the project. I spent my whole recess with my clipboard and sign up sheet and I got a lot of other kids to help."
On October 9th the students completed the project. "It was incredible to watch thirty second graders, all full of energy, spend their recess picking up trash around our playground and outdoor spaces. They were all so eager to contribute, and their excitement was contagious!" said Mrs. Warhurst.
Beth's simple idea to clean up the schoolyard turned into a full-fledged community effort, showing that one person truly can make a difference. It was a beautiful reminder that even small actions can have a big impact. Beth said, "It felt great to make a difference. Other people saw us cleaning up and wanted to help. We are talking about having another clean up day soon. The one thing I learned while doing this was being a leader is tough. But it was really great to see how many people wanted to join in to help!" Mrs. Warhurst added, "I am so proud of these students for stepping up and taking initiative."
Every day at Valley Park School District, limitless learning takes place. These second graders are excited to teach others the important lessons on being responsible citizens! Click the photo to see all the hard work that was done!
